Preseason
Our official preseason starts on August 14, 2010. On this first day we check all papers and make sure that we have a signed physical and parental consent. If you have not filled out these forms and returned them please do so now. If not, these forms can be found attached. PARTICIPATION IN ATHLETICS WILL NOT BE PERMITTED WITHOUT THESE FORMS. Please make sure that you have these forms into the Athletic Trainer or Nurse by August 14, 2010.
August 14 - All athletes are expected to report by 9:00 to the Kane Center for sign in and form collection. After this is complete, all athletes will be taken to run either a mile run or stay in the gymnasium for a 'beep' or 'PACER Test' Information on the pacer test can be found here. It is recommended that you watch the video and practice the test prior to the first day of preseason. The PACER Test will be modeled and tested at 30% of the open gyms throughout the summer. After the running tests we will continue with various strength, endurance, speed and agility testing. The complete testing usually takes 3 hours. Expect to be released by 1230pm on August 14. Start exercising now... mile times to be announced. (you need to make the mile by a designated time in order to earn a uniform - you can make the team without reaching the designated time, however, you will need to reach that time in order to earn your uniform)
Here are the 95% definite tryout information for both returning, new players and incoming 9th grade students.
Group A = new, incoming and some sophomores* (to be determined)
Group B = returning players and selected sophomores* (to be determined)

This is the schedule. Here are some FAQs
1. Does my daughter have to attend all the sessions for her group?
Yes, your daughter will be tired but will be happy to attend each session. There is so much to learn about volleyball and it takes some time. Players need to be at every session.
2. What paperwork does my daughter need have turned in so that she can participate?
A physical and parental consent form must be turned in to the school prior to her participation. If your daughter does not have the proper paperwork turned in she will not be allowed to participate until this paperwork is turned in, NO EXCEPTIONS. She should attend all sessions even if her paperwork is not turned in.
3. When are tryouts over? When will final cuts be made?
We try to keep as many players as we possibly can. However, we are limited to a maximum of 12 for each team. There are occasional exceptions. We do not have Juniors playing JV so the JV team is comprised of 9th and 10th graders. We have had many 9th and 10th graders who have played Varsity. These selections are made on a person by person basis and are based on team needs and athletic ability, coachability and skill. Tryouts this year are during the first 4 sessions with final cuts occurring after session 5 or 6.
4. What do I need to bring to tryouts?
All athletes should be dressed appropriately for athletic competition. She should be wearing appropriate sneakers, kneepads (not on testing day) and a t-shirt and shorts. Tank tops nor v-neck t-shirts are not tolerated during practice. A sports bra is not required but is highly encouraged. Bring a change of clothing, towel and water bottle (or two) to every session.
5. What happens on ‘athletic testing day’?
Athletes trying out will be running a timed mile. The completion of an 8:15 mile for a JV uniform and 7:30 mile for a Varsity uniform is expected. Those who do not make that mile time will be given multiple opportunities to run the mile at a time that does not interfere with tryout sessions. An athlete CAN make the team without completing the mile in the required time, however, they will not earn a uniform without making the mile in the required time.

Summer Training Opportunities
Open Gym Schedule will be posted on June 8th!

FAQ
How many athletes will you keep on JV and Varsity?
This is the most frequently asked question. We keep as many athletes as we feel that we can train well. This may mean that team chemistry will aid in the number of players that we keep and that your attitude is more important than your ability.
What if I never played volleyball before?
I love this question. Here is my honest answer. I love my job as a coach. I think it is the best thing to do in the world. No prior playing experience is necessary. I love to train new athletes. Although prior experience helps, it is not necessary. I promise that if you come with the right attitude and at a good level of physical fitness that you will be able to succeed in our program.
How fast do I need to run the mile? The PACER Test?
It is expected that in order to earn a JV uniform that you will be able to run a mile in 8:15 and to earn a varsity uniform that you will be able to run the mile in 7:45. This is the first time that we are using the PACER Test as a test for fitness levels. We expect that you should be able to last at least 8 minutes and better to last longer than 12 minutes.
I am sure that there are many many more questions and more will be answered in our weekly emails.
Please email me with any and all questions!
Summer Reading!
I know you have all been waiting to hear what we were reading this summer. First, Odd Girl Out: The Culture of Hidden Aggression in Girls by Rachel Simmons - same as last year. Take the time to read it again - or read it for the first time (for those of you who did not read it last year! I know who you are) and Your Performing Edge: The Total Mind-body Program for Excellence in Sports,Business and Life - 4th Edition by - Jo Ann Dahlkoetter. Both can be found at amazon.com. Neither book is very long and could easily be read in a weekend. I also recommend Odd Girl Speaks Out by Rachel Simmons for those of you who have already read Odd Girl Out. You will be quizzed on the book on August 14th after athletic testing.
